Abstract
CRISTA is a limb sounding infrared experiment to measure small scale disturbances in trace gas distributions. Small scale structures in atmospheric dynamics, photochemistry and energy budget can be inferred from these. To achieve high measuring speed and in consequence high spatial resolution the detectors and optics of the instrument are cooled by cryogenic helium. In addition CRISTA takes measurements in three view directions at the same time. The spatial resolution obtained this way is 500 km x 650 km in the horizontal and 2–3 km in the vertical direction. Up to 14 trace gases can be measured. CRISTA is designed to fly with the Space Shuttle. It is co-manifested with the ATLAS 3 mission, which is planned for the second half of 1994.
