Abstract

Horseflies make up the family Tabanidae in the suborder Brachycera. They are robust two-winged flies with antennae of three segments, the third of which has a series of annulations known as the style (Fig. 6.1). There are some 2000 species varying in length from 5 to 30 mm in several genera, the most important of which are Tabanus,Haematopota and Chrysops. Female Tabanids are blood-sucking (Fig. 6.2) and some species will readily transmit the filarial worm Loa loa, causing loaisis in humans.
