Abstract
Sandflies are nematocerous Diptera and make up the subfamily Phlebotominae of the family Psychodidae. Also within this family are the non-biting owl-midges or moth flies in the genus Psychoda. Sandflies occur throughout the tropics, subtropics and warm temperate regions of the world, the genera Phlebotomus and Sergentomyia in the Old World and the genus Lutzomyia in the New World.
