Abstract

Some magnetic behaviour has been known and used for many centuries. The earliest experiences of magnetic properties concerned the behaviour of magnetite, which is the only material which occurs naturally and shows obvious magnetic behaviour. It was this mineral which provided lodestone; it was known more than 2000 years ago to both the Greeks and Chinese. The actual word magnetism is derived from the area of ancient Greece known as Magnesia where the mineral was commonly found.
