Abstract
A study of the biology of fungi would be incomplete without some understanding of the causes of their genetic variability. They are highly variable organisms. Mechanisms to promote outbreeding are important in this respect. The fungi have proved to be ideal organisms for genetical analysis. Some 30 species have been intensely studied and have contributed a great deal to our understanding of genetic systems in general. The reasons for this are manifold.
