Abstract
The continuous MHD motion of a perfectly conducting medium is impossible in the zero point of a magnetic field, in which the electric field differs from zero. In the vicinity of this point the frozen-in condition breaks down and, in compliance with the statement of Syrovatskii (1971) (see Section 4.3; Chapter 12), the reconnecting current sheet (RCS)—the discontinuity dividing magnetic fields of opposite directions—forms there. At the same time Brushlinskii, Zaborov, and Syrovatskii (1980), Biskamp (1986) observed the splitting of the current sheet into other discontinuities in their numerical experiments.
