Abstract

The properties of the surface (or interface) regions are quite different to those of the bulk. For this reason, the knowledge of these regions is overwhelming importance specially for high technology ceramic materials. Following these ideas an updated overview of available analytical surface techniques will be given. A summary of the information to be obtained from the most common surface techniques will be presented. SEM, EDX and XPS will be exposed in a deeper way. Application of some of these techniques to the corrosion of αSiC rings exposed to the fume gases of a continuous aluminium-remelting furnace is discussed.
