Dielectric Relaxation Behaviour of Liquid Crystals

  • Chapter
The Molecular Dynamics of Liquid Crystals

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 431))

Abstract

Broad-band dielectric relaxation spectroscopy provides a direct means of studying the phase behaviour and molecular dynamics of thermotropic and lyotropic liquid-crystalline media. The present account describes briefly the molecular theories which have been proposed for their dielectric properties and summarises some of the results which have been obtained experimentally for low molar mass and polymeric systems. For low molar mass thermotropics the principal dielectric permittivities, measured over a wide frequency and temperature range, give information on the component dipole moments of the mesogenic groups with respect to the director axis, the local order parameter and the time correlation functions for the anisotropie motions of the mosogenic groups in the liquid-crystalline phase. Similar information is obtained for liquid crystal side chain polymers but the relaxation frequencies are generally lower than those for low molar mass materials and have a strong dependence on sample temperature, especially just above the apparent glass transition.
