Abstract

The familial aggregation of coronary heart disease is well recognized. Nora et al. analysed risk factors for coronary heart disease in 207 patients with myocardial infarction1. They observed that, for patients under 55 years of age, the highest risk, among 19 risk indices of coronary heart disease, was associated with a positive familial history of the disease. The risk associated with the latter was far higher than the effects of blood cholesterol, smoking, diabetes and other factors which influence the development of the disease. Although there are many reports about the heritability of atherosclerosis in humans, including reports on monozygotic and dizygotic twins, a thorough examination of the effects of unknown factors, including lifestyle, environmental and other factors, is required in these studies.
