Abstract
In this tutorial chapter I outline the simple theory and experimental spectroscopy connected with the size dependence of semiconductor crystallite electronic properties. I discuss three dimensional quantum confinement of internal states derived from bulk bands, surface states and their influence on dynamics, and the experimental techniques for understanding real crystallites. These ideas are applied to direct gap CdSe, indirect gap Si, and to the remarkable quantum properties of porous silicon thin films.
