Graphite — A Unique Host Lattice

  • Chapter
Progress in Intercalation Research

Part of the book series: Physics and Chemistry of Materials with Low-Dimensional Structures ((PCMALS,volume 17))

Abstract

This chapter highlights the correlation between the physical and chemical properties of the host material graphite with its ability to intercalate a large variety of guest species. It will be shown that the real (defect) properties of the host material exert a decisive influence on the physical properties of the resulting intercalated compound. The chemistry of the intercalation process will be described, taking into account the results from the study of physics on structure and dynamics. It emerges that the properties of the real graphite crystal and the intrinsic chemistry of the molecular guest species have been frequently overlooked in attempts to relate the intercalation process to thermodynamic equilibrium properties of the host-guest ensemble.
