Abstract

Many dwarf novae show sequences of alternating long and short outbursts. More generally, one sees a tendency for some small number of short outbursts — typically 1, 2, or 3 — to occur between two long outbursts. In SS Cygni, the best studied dwarf nova, there are fluctuations in the ratio of the number of long to short outbursts N(L)/N(S) occurring within a given time interval, which accompany variations in the time between outbursts t c. We present computations of the limit cycle model for dwarf nova outbursts in an effort to determine which control parameters of the model must vary in order to account for the observed correlation between < N(L)/N(S) > and < t c > seen in SS Cyg
