Abstract
A growing body of observational data on the near-nuclear ISM obscuring the broad-line region in NGC 1068 suggests that the AGN is surrounded by an extensive dusty molecular disk, characterised by a very large scale height. This discovery has necessitated revision of the prevailing consensus on the physical characteristics of the obscuring agent which forms the central plank of the theory attempting to unifying the two types of Seyfert galaxies. Here we discuss the implications of recent near-infrared spectroscopic-, mid-infrared continuum-, and millimetre interferometricimaging of the inner few arcseconds of NGC 1068 which suggest that the distribution of the ISM in the nuclear vicinity is rather different to that hitherto assumed.
