Abstract
As with most aspects of work on bananas and plantains both descriptive studies and scientific research on the underground parts of the plant have been predominately on the major high value export varieties; investigations, for example, on the AAA variety ‘Gros Michel’ (Moreau and Le Bourdelles, 1963) being followed in turn by studies of the AAA Cavendish varieties that replaced it (Beugnon and Champion, 1966; Lassoudière, 1978; Avilán et al., 1982).
