Abstract
One of the most interesting applications of voltammetric techniques has been in the study of reactions initiated by oxidation or reduction at an electrode. In this chapter, we consider the mechanisms of electrode processes influenced by coupled homogeneous chemical reactions. In §5.1, we review some principles of chemical kinetics and discuss the kinds of reactions which may be initiated by electron transfer. In §5.2, we introduce some techniques of spectroelectrochemistry which can be used with voltammetric experiments to deduce mechanisms. In §5.3–§5.5, we consider applications of the voltammetric methods introduced in Chapter 4 to several kinds of mechanistic problems.
