Nickel-based alloys: recent developments for the aero-gas turbine

  • Chapter

Abstract

The principal requirements for materials for the hot-end of gas turbines for aerospace applications are:

  • high melting point

  • good oxidation/corrosion resistance

  • high temperature strength

  • microstructural stability at high temperature

  • low density

  • high stiffness

  • good fabricability

  • acceptable cost

  • reproducible performance

Nickel-based alloys have evolved as the metallic materials with the best combination of these properties for these particular applications in gas turbines.
