Response to iron chlorosis of different hydroponically grown Citrus varieties

Abstract

New Citrus varieties are generally more resistant to diseases, but their efficiency to take up Fe from the external medium has not been improved significantly. In this work we compared the behaviour of 8 different variety/rootstock combinations supplied with low Fe levels. Seven year old citrus trees, hydroponically grown in a greenhouse, were supplied with no iron from March to June, then with 0.25 mg L-1 Fe as FeEDDHA from July to September, and with 2.5 mg L-1 Fe from October to November. Chlorosis ratings (1–5) and total and 1 M HCl soluble Fe concentrations were determined on leaf samples twice a month from March to November.

Orange varieties showed less visual symptoms of chlorosis than lemon varieties, despite the fact that Fe concentration in the leaves was similar or even slightly larger in orange than in lemon. Rootstocks generally had less effect on Fe uptake than varieties, although the Citrus macrophylla rootstock shows higher absorption of Fe than the “sour” orange rootstock. Among lemon trees, the “Primofiore” variety took up more Fe than the “Verna” variety. The orange variety with greatest resistance to iron chlorosis was Washington Navel. The Citrus volkameriana rootstock induced a larger Fe concentration in the leaf than the “Cleopatra” mandarin.
