Abstract

The skin functions as an anatomic and physiologic barrier between the body and the surroundings. The skin offers protection against physical, chemical, and microbiologic influences and also makes it possible for the animal to perceive temperature differences, pain, and touch. The skin is formed of two layers, the outer layer called the epidermis and the inner layer called the dermis (Fig. 15-1).
