Abstract

The indication for examination of the male reproductive tract is usually provided by a breeding problem or by signs that appear to arise from an abnormality of this system. It is also becoming more common that examination of the male’s reproductive system and semen is requested before the animal is used for breeding. If the problem formulation leads to a diagnostic plan that includes an examination of the male reproductive tract, the history is extended by questions directed to this organ system. The physical examination includes an external examination of the scrotum, testes, epididymis, prepuce, and penis, and an examination of the prostate by rectal palpation. The examination is concluded with collection of semen.
