Abstract
The functions of the kidneys and the urinary tract are closely related and yet differ greatly from each other. The kidneys fill an important role in maintaining homeostasis. Via the production of urine the end products of metabolism are eliminated and the composition of the extracellular fluid is maintained within narrow limits. The urinary tract provides for the removal of urine, by means of a gradually filling reservoir which can be emptied at an appropriate time.
