Abstract
Although in vitro propagation of coconut palms has been researched for more than two decades [1, 7], this species remains recalcitrant and is still solely propagated sexually. Success in producing a very limited number of plantlets through in vitro propagation by somatic embryogenesis has been reported [2], but it is disappointing that during these two decades, only two or three vegetatively propagated plantlets have been established ex vitro in the field. It is not stated whether the plantlets produced were truly clonal or not. This is a small return for the level of input into coconut tissue culture research. Apparently, there is still no protocol available for the reproducible in vitro production of clonal plants on a large scale.
