Abstract
Hungary is located in the lowest part of the basin formed by the Carpathian Mountains and the eastern foothills of the Alps (Fig. 1). The area of the country is 93000 km2, 52% of which are plains, and the rest hilly country. Mountains higher than 500 m above sea level cover only 1 % of the territory of Hungary.
