Abstract
Some 18 European and South American Institutes collaborate in the DEep Near Infrared Survey of the Southern Sky (DENIS) to provide a full digitization of the southern sky at wavelengths, similar to the Two Micron Sky Survey (TMSS). That survey was carried out some 25 years ago and has a sensitivity limit 10 magnitudes brighter than DENIS. The DENIS survey started end 1994, and the expected duration is at least four years. ESO has granted this project the Key Program status, and provided full allocation of the telescope during the planned data acquisition period.
