Abstract

An estimate of the canal seepage losses from an unlined irrigation channel to the adjoining aquifer is important in the initial stages of canal design and also in the efficient utilization of available water. Here, a mathematical model based on the boundary element method is presented to estimate the steady state seepage losses from an irrigation canal into the adjacent layered isotropic media. The results are compared with those obtained by using the finite elment method and found to agree satisfactorily. The formulation of the problem using BEM is found to be simple and convenient compared to other methods of analysis.
