Abstract
We have recorded high-resolution spectra of the λ5797 and λ6614 diffuse bands using the mtra-High-Resolution Facility (UHRF) on the 3.9m Anglo-Australian Telescope. These bands are among the most prominent of the sharper diffuse bands (typical FWHM ca. 1Å) and have been reported to have relatively steep short wavelength profiles; they also belong to the important Family 3 classification of Krdowski and Walker (1986,1987). The data were recorded along lines of sight towards lightly reddened stars at spectroscopic resolutions of 3.6 × 105 and 9 × 105. In the majority of spectra it is found that the profiles are asymmetric with a steep short-wavelength side and in the case of λ6614 there is some evidence of fine structure within the profile.
