Part of the book series: Developments in Cardiovascular Medicine ((DICM,volume 171))

Summary

Over the last decade, substantial advancements in the field of myocardial perfusion scintigraphy have markedly improved the diagnosis and subsequent evaluation of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). These improvements have originated from the development of single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), the addition of several new technetium-99m (99mTc) based radiopharmaceuticals into clinical practice, and the introduction of pharmacological stress agents. Yet, thallium-201 (201Tl) has kept its role as the predominant tracer for assessment of myocardial viability. In this era of continuing cost containment, myocardial perfusion scintigraphy has emerged as a highly cost effective noninvasive modality for guiding patient management.
