Abstract

It is somewhat paradoxical that globular clusters appear to contain so few cataclysmic variables (CVs), while containing so many low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). In the galactic disk, CVs outnumber LMXBs by several orders of magnitude (Iben & Livio 1993), while the situation appears to be reversed in globular clusters. In particular, LMXBs are believed to form in the cores of globular clusters via dynamical processes such as tidal capture and exchange, these processes being efficient in such environments. This leads to the paradox: given that white dwarfs outnumber neutron stars by a large factor (and taking into account mass segregation), where are all the CVs?
