Cataclysmic Variables

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 205))

Abstract

Classical novae (CNe) are believed to occur in cataclysmic variables (CVs) as a result of a thermonuclear runaway (TNR) in hydrogen-rich layers on-top of the white dwarf (WD) which have accumulated prior to the explosion through mass transfer from the low-mass main-sequence secondary (see e.g. Livio 1994 for a review). The study of collective properties of CNe and the differences to collective properties of CVs in general could provide important clues on physical parameters determining the ignition and appearance of a nova event.
