Speciation of Organic Sulphur Forms in Solid Fuels and Heavy Oils

  • Chapter
Composition, Geochemistry and Conversion of Oil Shales

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 455))

Abstract

The recent advances that has been achieved with X-ray techniques, temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and oxidation (TPO) and selective chemical modification for the speciation of organic sulphur forms present in solid fuels are reviewed. Although each of these approaches has its limitations, a consistent overall picture is beginning to emerge on the nature of organic sulphur groups in solid fuels and heavy oil fractions. As might be anticipated, the more stable sulphur groups are most abundant in the more mature coals and petroleum source rocks. Further, the use of these advanced techniques has enabled the changes to be monitored that occur in the refining of heavy oils and chemical treatments being developed to reduce the sulphur levels of coals.
