Abstract

From 1991–1993, bioethics has been steadily developing in China, with a number of noteworthy events. First, bioethicists have been more and more involved in decision-making, as revealed in the papers of the First Workshop on “Ethical and Legal Issues in Limiting and Regulating Reproduction” (held November 11–14, 1991 and published in 1992) and in the “Ethical Guidelines on the Policy on the Prevention of AIDS/STD” adopted by the Expert Workshop on “The Epidemic of STD and Its Countermeasures: Social, Ethical and Legal Issues” (held March 15–18, 1993). Second, because difficult cases increasingly pose ethical as well as medical and legal issues, doctors and medical scientists are now addressing normative concerns, as evidenced by the appearance of a new journal, China Health Law, in 1992.
