Abstract

The 1991–1993 period has been of crucial importance for the development of bioethics in Italy. Although the Parliament has been unable to pass statutes on many issues still in need of legislation, largely because of a genuine political and institutional revolution, public discussion of bioethical issues has been steadily increasing, gaining greater attention from the media and from the general public. Moreover, the Comitato Nazionale per la Bioetica (CNB), a governmentally appointed commission, has continued its work, issuing several statements and recommendations on various topics. In addition, new bioethical institutions have been created and many research centers have enlarged their initiatives and fields of interest. In a recent informal inquiry, 52 centers report bioethics among their fields of interest. At least 9 of them devote exclusive attention to bioethical issues [21].
