Abstract
The long-term project CASIMIR was started in 1990 by joint efforts of geological institutes of SB RAS and Belgium and was devoted to the comparative study of sedimentary infill and mechanisms of rift basin formation, with Lake Baikal and East African lakes as examples. The number of participants in the project increased due to the involvement of scientists and students from European universities and research institutes of the RAS. Interdisciplinary research includes methods of structural geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geothermalism, limnology. The results obtained help to understand the processes of geodynamic evolution of the Earth, of the environment, global climatic change, origin of natural hazards, and other problems of social and economic significance.
