Abstract

Since World War II, agricultural production per hectare has increased considerably in Europe due to a rapid process of intensification of the production processes. Unfortunately, along with the increase in production of meat, milk, eggs, cereals, sugar beets, etc., environmental impacts from agricultural production processes have increased at the same pace, if not faster. To mention just some of the environmental problems, current agriculture substantially contributes to the dehydration of ecosystems, soil erosion and the contamination of soil, groundwater and surface water with pesticides and nutrients, such as phosphate and nitrogen.
