Abstract
The World Health Oranisation in 1985 formulated a strategy which clearly defined targets for the promotion of “Health for all by the year 2000”. Its aims were to increase life expectancy and reduce premature death around the world. Following this lead, the U.K. Government in 1992 launched the new “Health of the Nation” strategy nation-wide. The lead role in this new initiative was given to the National Health Service. Five initial key areas for action were selected in which it was thought that substantial (and measurable) improvements in health could be achieved. These are coronary heart disease and stroke, cancers, mental illness, HIV/AIDS and sexual health, and accidents. Each of these areas represent major causes of premature death or avoidable ill-health in the U.K. They are also costly.
