Abstract

The recently discovered superconductor HgBa2CuO4 (Hg1201) [1] has unusually high transition temperature of 94K. This compound belongs to the tetragonal system with space group PA/mmm (D1 4h) [2]. It is structurally similar to Tl2Ba2CuO6 (T12201) in that both are built out of CuO6 octahedra with Ba atoms embedded between the octahedra. These compounds differ in the presence of separating Hg and T10 layers. Raman spectra measurements on Hg1201 have already been announced [3,4]. Since there still exist contradictions in the assignment of the Raman active modes and no infrared frequencies have been measured yet, we have tried to predict these modes on the basis of lattice dynamical calculations within a shell model using parameters transferred from metal oxides and cuprates.
