Abstract

Measurements of the amount of adsorbable organic halogens in soil and water point towards a significant natural production of halogenated organic compounds in terrestrial environments (Asplund and Grimvall 1991). Up to 10 % of the aromatic rings in natural humic material can be halogenated (Dahlman et al. 1993). A hypothesis is that chloroperoxidases are involved in the formation of these compounds (Asplund and Grimvall 1991; Asplund et al. 1993). In the present communication, the question is addressed whether the natural concentration of halogenated humic structures is kinetically or thermodynamically controlled. This is done by evaluating whether the observed degree of halogenation of humic material is in agreement with the thermodynamically predicted equilibrium ratio between chlorinated and non-chlorinated aromatic rings in humic substances.
