Abstract
The Swedish National Testing and Research Institute, SP is the national institute in Sweden for technical evaluation, testing, certifying, measurement technique and research. SP is the largest centre among the Nordic countries for metrology technique. SP holds the national standards for most of the physical quantities and their traceability to international standards. SP supplies the Swedish industry and society with measurement support, competence and traceable measurements. SP offers a broad and nation-wide calibration service for measurements in most of the industrial sectors. Considerable research activities are of great importance to develop competence within each measurement area. We develop improved national standards, methods and measurement instruments continuously. SP collaborates with technical universities and participates in the international metrology collaboration, especially within the International Bureau for Weight and Measures, BIPM and the European metrological federation, EUROMET. SP was established because “rational testings and scientific research are of great importance in a stronger international competition”, as cited from the proposal to a new National Testing Establishment, in 1903.
