Factors Affecting the Reactivity of Organic Model Compounds in Hydrotreating Reactions

  • Chapter
Theoretical Aspects of Heterogeneous Catalysis

Part of the book series: Van Nostrand Reinhold Catalysis Series ((NRECSES))

Abstract

This chapter deals with the study of the molecular factors that affect the reactivity of organic model compounds over sulfided hydrotreating catalysts. For the foreseeable future, hydrotreating will remain a major processing for any modern refinery. However, it is difficult to determine how the use of hydrotreating will grow. The major reason for this uncertainty arises from the many alternate processes being considered for converting residual fractions and heavy fuels to clean liquid fuels. Another major factor affecting the growth of hydrotreating is the future of the synthetic fuels industry, particularly the upgrading of liquids from coal, shale, and tar sands, where the levels of oxygen and nitrogen are much higher than those of conventional crude oils; consequently, relatively more hydrotreating will be required.1
