Abstract

There is nothing new about the activity of psychotherapy. Attempts to solve personal problems through conversation can be traced back to biblical times, and in many tribal societies the shaman or medicine man has the role of helping to resolve psychological disorder (Frank, 1973). However, the way that psychotherapy is currently practised, organized, researched and theorized about make it a peculiarly twentieth-century phenomenon.
