Abstract

In Chapter 3 we concentrated on the basic power flow and power budget equations for various links of a satellite system. In this and the next chapters we focus on the detailed electronics of a satellite payload, and examine the specific waveshapes and noise processes generated by such electronics. Waveform characteristics become important when investigating distortion and suppression effects imposed by the satellite hardware, or when seeking methods to further improve an existing system. The entire question of satellite system optimization requires an accurate waveform model in order to understand the exact manner by which system anomalies are introduced. In this chapter we concentrate on the basic single-channel transponder, in which a single uplink carrier is processed for downlink transmission.
