Abstract
Cancer can be a wasting disease of multiple causation. If it progresses unchecked, malnutrition is an inevitable consequence. Malnourishment may arise because loss of appetite reduces calorie and protein intake with resultant weight loss. The anorexia of cancer may be due to either specific metabolic effects of the tumor or altered cell metabolism wherein there is nutrient waste. Antineoplastic therapy with its side effects of anorexia, malabsorption, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea is often a potent cause of cancer cachexia.
