Abstract
In most of this book we have been concerned with a discussion of the basic properties of a plasma and have referred to experimental results only in passing, without giving details of how they are obtained. Here we redress the balance somewhat by discussing diagnostic techniques, that is the methods which are used to obtain information about actual plasmas. Since many plasmas of interest are under rather extreme conditions of temperature and are often of very short duration, it is by no means a simple matter to obtain details of the conditions which prevail in them.
