History and physical examination of trauma of the face and neck

It may not be possible to obtain a history if the patient is unconscious and it may only be brief and limited if he is semiconscious. The examination and treatment of bleeding and airway obstruction take precedence over the history but some facts must be obtained quickly, if not from the patient then from relatives, friends or witnesses.
