History and physical examination of the ear

The main complaint should be established first, with particular regard to onset, duration and recurrence. In taking an aural history enquire specifically into the six likely presenting symptoms. These are:
  • hearing loss

  • vertigo and imbalance

  • tinnitus

  • discharge

  • earache

  • facial nerve palsy or weakness
