Abstract
This chapter will critically review attempts to identify receptors for a miscellaneous group of small peptides with apparent multiple roles in the body, only one of which may be that of a neurotransmitter. Most appear to be present in the gut and thus belong to the group of brain-gut peptides (Pearse 1976, 1978). Peptides to be discussed in detail include angiotensin, neurotensin, bombesin, vasoactive intestinal peptide, thyroliberin, and somatostatin. Although evidence implicating them as neurotransmitter candidates is far from complete, all appear to be present in the central nervous sytem and to be localized to specific groups of neurons as judged by immunohistochemistry. It should be noted, however, that immunochemical techniques most commonly used to identify and measure these peptides do not preclude the possibility that in some cases a structurally related, perhaps larger, peptide is being measured in addition to or instead of the identified peptide. Identified receptors in brain thus may be responding in part or wholly to the related peptide in vivo.
