En 1957, Hugh Everett est, semble-t-il, le premier à énoncer et publier l’hypothèse de la ramification de l’espace-temps, autrement dit de la pluralité des futurs, comme explication de l’indéterminisme quantique (voir Everett, 1957, spécialement note des pp. 459–460). L’originalité de son idée est soulignée par Wheeler (1957).
