Abstract
In 1908 Hausmann1 proved that systemically administered haematoporphyrin might be fatal for mice if they were exposed to violet light, while a much larger dose of this substance was harmless if the animals were kept in the dark. Meyer-Betz2 injected himself with haematoporphyrin which resulted in marked erythema and oedema of the light exposed parts of the body. In spite of this recognized relation between porphyrins and photosensitivity the pathogenesis of the dermatitis of patients who suffer from photosensitive porphyria is not fully understood.
