Abstract

Two of the numerous aspects of the biology of host-tumour interaction and their implications for the cancer patient have been of major concern to tumour immunologists during the past 20 years (Table 12.1). The first of these has been the demonstration that many, if not all, tumour cells express constituents that are absent, or virtually absent, from corresponding normal cells. Since these cellular components have been sought and found by means of immunologic technology, they are collectively termed tumour-specific antigens (TSA).
