Isotropic Turbulence: Phenomenology and Simulations

  • Chapter
Turbulence in Fluids

Part of the book series: Fluid Mechanics and Its Applications ((FMIA,volume 40))

Abstract

Here, we will consider isotropic turbulence both from a phenomenological point of view, using basically dimensional arguments (for instance to derive Kolmogorov’s theory or Richardson’s law) or DNS and LES. We will be interested in small-scale transfers of kinetic energy, and diffusion of passive scalars. Numerical simulations will allow us to study the coherent structures of isotropic turbulence. We will give finally some informations on small-scale intermittency.
