Abstract

Mullerian Inhibiting Substance, a fetal testicular product, acts upon the ductal elements of the urogenital ridge, causing regression of both the epithelial Mullerian duct and its surrounding mesenchyme. Early in regression, mesenchymal cells align with their long axes tangential to the basement membrane of the duct, and interstitial spaces are lost as the cells condense toward the basement membrane. Sequentially, the basement membrane is broken down and cell migration occurs across the eroded boundary, macrophages in and epithelial cells out. Subsequently, the lateral tip of the ductal portion of the urogenital ridge disappears. Whether the testicular product (MIS) acts upon the epithelial cells directly or upon the mesenchymal cells which in turn interact with the epithelium is not certain.
